»Abstract: This essay was written as a Preface to the Farsi-language edition of »Planning in the Public Domain« (Friedmann 1987). Though written with an eye on the Iranian reading public, it gave me a chance to reflect on what had changed and what was still valid in a book that despite the passage of two decades is still in print. I conclude that what I had then called the radical social mobilization tradition of planning and which I now refer to as transformative planning has partly been absorbed into the mainstream of practice but continues to be a valid radical tradition that is based in the emancipatory practices of organized civil society. ...«
